Awareness - Advocacy - Action

Soroptimist International is a worldwide organization for women in management and professions, working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women.

Soroptimists are women who use the special expertise and management skills developed in their working life to advance the status of women and make the world a better place. Membership offers the opportunity to work with like-minded women throughout the world for human rights for all, equality, development and peace.

Soroptimists seek to become an active influence for positive change in society through Awareness, Advocacy, and Action.

Soroptimist International is committed to:

  • service to local, national and international communities
  • active participation in decision-making.

Founded in 1921, Soroptimist is an international organization for business and professional women who provide volunteer service to their communities. Almost 100,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries and territories contribute time and financial support to community–based and international projects benefiting women and girls.

The name, Soroptimist, means “best for women,” and that’s what the organization strives to achieve. Soroptimists are women at their best working to help other women to be their best.

Soroptimist members belong to local clubs, which determine the focus of service to their communities. Club projects range from renovating domestic violence shelters, to providing mammograms to low-income women, to sponsoring self-esteem workshops for teenage girls. In addition, Soroptimists participate in organization-wide programs that include the Women’s Opportunity Awards, Soroptimist Club Grants for Women and Girls, the Soroptimist Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence, the  Making a Difference for Women Award and the Violet Richardson Award.

Soroptimist International of the Redwoods is a Founder Regional Chapter.  Established in 1980 by a handful of Garberville/Redway Business women, we have contributed to our community in many ways

How much time and effort does membership involve?

Membership in a Soroptimist Club is based on eligibility utilizing a classification principal which assures broad representation of the business professional and economic life of a club’s community.  Soroptimists are leaders in their communities.  Their professions are varied and represent over 3,500 occupations and professions.

Regular bi-weekly attendance is recommended to maintain a voting status.

Each member serves on 2 or more committees and participates in club-wide activities.

Some committees involve small regular tasks during meetings; others may call for one or more periods of activity during the year.  Most committees schedule breakfast or noon meetings when they need to meet.

Occasional absences (for travel, illness or business) are unavoidable.  “Making up” by visiting other Soroptimist Clubs or attending District meetings, regional conferences and International Federation Conventions, is a pleasant way to make new friends.

When a lengthy absence can’t be avoided, a leave can be requested for 1 to 6 months.

At our meetings, there are weekly raffles, Happy Times and Fun Fines to support administrative expenses for our club.  These contributions are given in the spirit of friendship.  Members may also make voluntary fundraising contributions for special service projects.
